The only way I am remembering what day it is, is to look at my previous post. Another smooth night, not much swell around and the ship is very steady. Woke up at our normal time but with the clock going back overnight it was 6.15 and not 7.15. It is sunny and quite warm 26 degrees. Bit of a breeze though at 20 knots. We turned round the top of Cape York during the night and we are now in the Arafura sea. We still have three more days at sea before we reach Komodo Island. Today we will sail past Darwin heading towards East Timor. We will have an early gym session.
After breakfast we team up with Leo and Kathy from last night for trivia. Don’t do too bad, but still way off the winners. Two groups with 19 out of 20. Either there are a lot of smart people on board or they have quick internet access! After trivia we head to an enrichment talk. It is a talk about rogues of the South Pacific which was very interesting and entertaining. It was about fraudsters and convicts in the 1800s. One particular fraudster wanted to set up his own kingdom and approached British authorities about setting up in an area of WA, this was rejected and so was an approach to the French for New Caledonia. He eventually claimed an island of Rabaul and marketed it as New France. He sold some 700,000 acres of land, but the island was only 70 acres. Four ships transported new settlers to the island, one was never heard of again, one was shipwrecked with a few survivors making the island, one reached Singapore where the settlers suspected things were not right and refused to go on and one with Italians did make it only to find there was nothing there. Survivors were picked years later by a British naval ship and taken to Singapore. They were eventually offered settlement in NSW. The fraudster was caught served some jail time but continued to defraud people by other means. The other stories were also just as interesting.
After lunch back to the gym and then more relaxing on our balcony.
After dinner tonight we have a red wine on our balcony watching the stars in warm 27 degrees comfort. We are passing Arnehm land as we head into the Timor Sea. It is a bit windy but little swell and smooth sailing.
