Ann was a little sad last night as we left Italy! But she is happy we are only two days from Barcelona! Today we are in France - Marseille. We woke up late this morning at 7.30. The sky is clear and it is a pleasant 25 degrees. We have a shuttle from the port to a drop off point near the city. Marseille is a huge port, it takes us 15 mins on the bus just to clear the gates, but the port continues on. There are two other cruise ships in port on the dock opposite to us. The Enchanted Princess which can have up to 3660 guests and the MSC Orchestra which can have up to 3200. Could be crowded.
As we make our way after being dropped off we pass a modern multi storey shopping centre. We go inside for a quick look and there is a sandwich and cake shop with the most magnificent array of cakes. May have to call in here on the way back.
We continue on and arrive at a market where Ann picks up a pair of lightweight pants. We then find a supermarket and buy some M&Ms (in need of proper chocolate) and toothpaste. Should have realised one tube would not last three months. Continued on and we came across the Cathedral de la Major. The oldest church in France and the last Cathedral built on French soil. It took 40 years to build and was completed in 1893. It is a magnificent building. We entered and it was a beautiful sight. The marble floors were fantastic, as were the stained glass windows and the side chapels as well as the main altar.
We then went on to the Museum and had a rest in there and decided to head back. We stopped at the cake shop and I had an eclair and Ann had a raspberry and strawberry tart. Both were yum! We went up the next level and there were brand shops and we think they are outlet stores, and one is Zara. Another couple of T-shirts for Ann and we head back to the bus pick up. We eventually get back on board by 2.30. Another great day. The max temp was only 30 degrees and it was much more pleasant walking around.
We are due to sail away from Marseille at around 5.30, but the captain advises us that he has agreed with the captain of Enchanted Princess that we will follow them out of the port and there may be some horn blowing. Well we left just after 6 and there sure was some horn blowing. The enchanted Princess played the love boat theme and our response was a series of long and short blasts - pathetic. Obviously our horn blowing is basic compared to the newer ships.
The John and Paul tribute act was again tonight and they played songs from Sgt Peppers and others around that era. Once again they were fantastic.
