Arrived in Qaqortoq early last night and we anchored in the bay. During dinner on our cruise to Qaqortoq we kept getting interrupted as large icebergs kept floating past the ship requiring everyone to look out the windows. While anchored in the bay we had a beautiful sunset, but if happened so quickly. I was try to get a shot of the sun as it went behind a mountain. One second it was there and then it was gone.
On waking up in Qaqortoq it is 4 degrees but sunny skies and no wind and the occasional iceberg floating in the bay. After breakfast the temperature has climbed to 5 degrees, but with little to no wind it just feels fresh.
We go and get our shuttle tickets at 10.45, but it is another 60 minutes before we are able to board the shuttle. We are on shore by 12.15. There is another ship anchored in the bay, a Holland American ship, the Zaandam, it holds just over 1400 passengers. It is a lovely little town. In the town centre there are tables and tents set up with handicrafts and singing, and even jumping castles. It is a very rocky place with steeply rising land. The houses and buildings are very colourful perched in the hillsides.
We spend just over an hour on land and then head back to the ship, there is quite a queue but we manage to get on the second shuttle, only waiting 20 minutes. It is a beautiful sunny day and we are forced to take off our jackets and gloves, the temperature reached 13 degrees, almost balmy!
We are scheduled to set sail at 3.30, but the captain tells we have a medical emergency and the doctor has asked for 30 minutes to assess the situation, after the 30 mins the doctor has said it is progressing well but he wants another 20 mins. After that everything is fine and we head off. The sail out goes well and we are passing many large icebergs on both sides of the ship, but it is bitterly cold. I can see a fog bank in the distance and sure enough about 70 minutes after we left we hit the fog bank and the fog horn starts up again! Ten minutes later we have sailed through the fog bank and are back to clear skies. We are going to try for the northern lights tonight if we still have clear skies. We will set the alarm for 1 am.
After dinner the fog has rolled in again and the temperature dropped to 6 degrees.
